Robert Lewandowski is the only possible option to be named the best player of the year, after the great performances he has made for Bayern Munich this season, says former Bavarian midfielder Friedhelm Funkel.
The 32-year-old striker has scored 55 goals in 46 appearances this season, helping Bayern win the Bundesliga and the German Cup, as well as reach the Champions League final.
The Golden Ball award has been canceled for this year, while awards for FIFA’s best, which were due in September, were postponed to May.
Despite this, former Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha Berlin coach Funkel is convinced that Lewandowski has been without a doubt the best player this season, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi far behind.
“Lewandowski’s performances in the Bundesliga, the cup and the Champions League this season have been great.” Funkel told Sky Sports.
“No one has been able to get close to Lewandowski this year in what he has achieved. He has scored many, many goals, but he has also given many assists.” he added.
