Former Real Madrid president defends Bartomeu: He is being treated like a black sheep

Josep Maria Bartomeu is being treated like a black sheep and is being unfairly criticized in Barcelona, according to former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon.

Bartomeu is facing harsh criticism at the Camp Nou, as captain Lionel Messi has sought to leave the club at the end of an extremely disappointing season.

The six-time Golden Ball winner has submitted a departure letter following Barca’s embarrassing 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

But Calderon, who has previously served as president of rival Real Madrid, has expressed grief for Bartomeu, whose post will be voted on in the March election.

“Sitting in this chair is very difficult. It’s a lot harder than people might think.” said Calderon.

“There is a lot of criticism and when things go well, the praise goes to the players and the coaches. It is normal that the president is the black sheep.” he added.

“This is the person who is accused of not buying a certain player or letting go of a player whom the fans consider important for the team. I do not like this.” he added.

“I think Bartomeu has been a good president. From what I see and what I know about him, Bartomeu is a good president.”
