The years are just numbers for one like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who although with 39 years on his shoulder, is going through a second youth with the Milan jersey, after scoring 7 goals in 4 matches in the championship and is leading the red and blacks to the top of the Serie A rankings.
The Swedish striker returned to Milan last December and this summer renewed his contract until June 2021 with the Red and Blacks, but now Maldini and Gazidis are considering extending their cooperation even further.
Ibra’s very good form, but also his role as a leader in a staff full of talented young players, is tempting the red and black leaders to keep the Swede in the team for another season.
On the other hand, the 39-year-old striker himself aims to renew with Milan, as he wants to play again in the Champions League, a competition in which he has not played since 2017, when he was activated in a single match with the Manchester United jersey.
Another reason that could push the parties to renew is the fact that next season Ibra will have 40 years on his shoulders and Italian fiscal policies are such that would ease the burden of the Swede’s high salary.
So in addition to names like Donnarumma, Calhanoglu and Franck Kessie, now Maldini has put on the agenda the renewal with Ibra, while the Swede has undertaken not only to bring Milan back to the Champions, but to play there with the tricolor flag stamped on the shirt.
