Josep Maria Bartomeu has insisted that he and the board of directors have gladly taken the decision to resign from Barcelona.
Although a day earlier he said he had no intention of leaving, Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned as president of Barcelona on Tuesday night.
Bartomeu broke off relations with club captain Lionel Messi and the club’s fans insisted on his departure.
The Catalan businessman had started his career as Barcelona boss spectacularly, after Barca won the treble in 2015, in his first year in position, but recent years have been devastating for the club on and off the field.
“The board and I are pleased with the decision we have made.” Bartomeu told a news conference on Tuesday.
Bartomeu suddenly changed his mind about resigning only after the Catalan government gave the green light to hold the no-confidence motion against him.
More than 20,000 club members had signed a no-confidence motion against him.
