“Messi must reduce his salary, to extend his contract in Barcelona”

One of the presidents running to replace Josep Maria Bartomeu has said that the club can no longer keep the Argentine with his current salary

Barcelona presidential candidate Toni Freixa has sent messages to Lionel Messi that he should reduce his salary to extend his contract.

Freixa is one of the contenders for president where, although he wants Messi to sign a new contract, he insists that Barca can no longer pay such salaries until the end of the season – where his contract expires.

“Leo and I will talk calmly, face to face with the best Barcelona player,” Freixa told El Curubito. “For him, but also for all the players with whom we will sign or renew, we will make offers that are in line with our income as we have them now.”

“It is obvious, and I can not deceive anyone, that the offer that will be presented to him will not be the same as the older one, because the income has dropped significantly and it is necessary to find another formula.”

“You should not order Messi or convince him of other things. We have to look him in the eye and talk to him more to know what we both want, what Barcelona wants, what he wants. We think Messi can still play football.”
