“I have seen many players who have been phenomenal but they have been caught with drugs and ended up in prison, like Fabio Paim,” Penguina said in an interview with MARCA.
“Cristiano came together with Sporting CP in a race, which was organized by us. He was only 11 years old at the time. “I had an agreement with the agency that whoever was chosen as the best player of that race would be rewarded for spending a week in the Algarve apartment,” he added.
“He was the best player, but the Sporting coach asked me not to choose him because he came from a poor family in Madeira and could not afford to go there,” said Pinguinha.
Approximately a decade later, the Penguin had the opportunity to see another shining star, now known as Ansu Fati, during a youth race in Seville.
“I was on the pitch watching the games and suddenly I noticed a player, I asked the little boy about it, they told me he was born in 2002 but he was playing in groups that were two years older because for him it was simple, ”Penguinha added.
“He could use both feet, he was phenomenal, he always played with his head up and had dribbling and scissors skills.”
“He was a footballer who played with passion and everything looked natural.”
